Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami 25 july 2020 significance in Astrology and Rituals

Nag Panchami is an important festival of the Hindus which is celebrated in the holy month of Shravan according to the Hindu calendar. This festival falls on the fifth day of moon’s waning in the Shravan month. Snakes are considered very powerful and are associated with mighty gods like Lord Shiva, who is also know as the protector of the snakes. Sheshnaga, a six hooded snake, is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Mansa Devi is also known as the Goddess of snakes, who is said to be a part of Lord Shiva himself. Snakes also have a significance in the Vedic Astrology and their effects on one’s life can be detrimental. People worship the snakes (Nag Devta) on this day for their blessings and well-being of their families.

The story behind the festival

Like all traditional festivals of India, Nag Panchami also has a story behind it which signifies its importance. There are many stories which signify the importance of this festival but the most widely accepted story is related to Kaliya Nag and Lord Krishna.

Once upon a time, a poisonous snake names Kaliya poisoned the entire Yamuna river with his poison. People who lived in the vicinity of the river started dying by consuming the river water. Lord Krishna figured the issue and jumped in Yamuna river to confront the demon. The battle was intense, but in the end, Kaliya gave up and he was forced to withdraw all the poison from the river. After this incident, Lord Krishna blessed the snake and said that the snakes will be offered with milk on the fifth moon waning day of the month of Shravan.

There is another story in the ancient texts which tell us the reason behind the poison in snakes. It is believed that, while Lord Shiva was drinking the poison that emerged from Samudramanthan, a few drops fell on the snakes which made them poisonous.

They are worshipped by people all across the country and even in Nepal. The believers seek their blessings to stay safe and lead a healthy life.

Significance in Astrology

Rahu and Ketu are two planets in the Vedic Astrology which are considered inauspicious. They are known as shadow planets and have no identity of their own. These two are formed out of head and tail of an immortal snake demon which was cut in half by Lord Vishnu. Rahu represents mental illness, skin diseases, breathing problems and at times, even death of someone close. Ketu on the other hand is related to brain disorders, ear problems, digestion issues and sufferings.

In Astrology, if one has all the planets in between Rahu and Ketu in his/ her kundali, it is known as Sarpa Dosh. It is present in one’s kundali because of some evil deeds committed by them in their previous birth. It may lead to gradual loss of health and wealth, mental problems and reduced confidence. Nag Panchami is considered a perfect opportunity for such people to seek forgiveness from Nag Devta for their deeds. There are various other ways in Vedic Astrology which can mitigate the effects of Sarpa Dosh.

Rituals for the day

There are various permanent serpent temples all across the country. People visit these temples and bathe the idol with milk. They also offer flowers, fruits and sweets to the Lord. Many people directly worship the snakes which are owned by snake charmers in exchange for money.

Lord Shiva and Mata Mansa are also worshipped by people to please the snakes and have their blessings. Special sweets (laddus) are made on this day from coconut and black sesame seeds.

Some people observe fast on this day to receive the blessings of Nag Devta. Digging the earth is strictly prohibited on this occasion as one might end up hurting the snakes living under the surface of the earth.

According to Garuda Puran, snakes should be painted on either side of the main door of the house so that the poisonous snakes do not enter one’s home.
