Vasant Panchami is also known as Basant Panchami is a unique Hindu festival. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on Vasant Panchami day. Vasant Panchami is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati the Goddess of knowledge, music, arts, science, and technology. Vasant Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami. Goddess Saraswati is the consciousness in us. Without her grace, speech and intelligence are not possible for a human. The power of speech, music, singing, thinking, and understanding is the gift of the goddess Saraswati only. This is the reason behind, considering her as the goddess of wisdom and intelligence. This is why many intellectual people worship goddess Saraswati on this day with intense devotion in order to gain happiness, peace, name, fame, glory, wealth and wisdom.
The festival is celebrated with different names in different regions. The Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the Magh month which corresponds to the end of the January or beginning of February as per the Gregorian Calendar. It is observed as ‘Sufi Basant’ in Sufi shrines, in Punjab and other adjoining regions. It is celebrated as the ‘Basant Festival of Kites’, in Gurudwara it is observed as the ‘Sikh Festival’. In households, for the children and in all educational institutes, Vasant Panchami is celebrated by a prayer sung in praise of Goddess Saraswati, whose idol is decorated with yellow or white flowers and garlands. Study materials and instruments of music and arts are placed in front of the goddess. Mainly, this is a unique Hindu festival, the Vasant Panchami marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. In West Bengal, the day is celebrated as Saraswati Puja, where people offer prayers to Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom. Wearing a saree is a common practice that is followed on this day. Many schools and colleges observe this day by worshipping an idol of the goddess. After the puja is over, Prasad is offered to the students and their family members followed by a delicious meal. Kesar Halwa and Khichdi are some of the delicacies that are served on Vasant Panchami. Students flock to their respective schools and colleges to participate in this festival.
The day of Vasant Panchami holds special significance for students. As Saraswati is the Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, students worship Her with immense fervor and zeal. They keep their notebooks, pens, and pencils near Goddess Saraswati’s feet and ask for enlightenment. The day of Vasant Panchami is also considered as initiating studies in young children. This tradition is called ‘Akshar Abhyasam’ which means little kids begin to write on this day. Schools and colleges organize special events on this day.
